This is the world's only Bikepacking Optimized Bear Spray Holder - Bottle Mount. The BearclawHolster™ is individually 3d printed by BearClaw Enterprises in Whitefish Montana, a special place where the residents know a thing or two about really big bears. If you've every tried to ride your backcountry bicycle with a can of Bear Spray, you know that this device is designed out of necessity! You're probably accustomed to using one of the floppy belt-mount holders or worse, packing your bear spray away into one of your bikepacking bags, where you're never going to get to it in time.

The Bikepacking Optimized Bear Spray Holster is designed to mount to one of your water bottle bosses with an included Stainless Steel M5 bolt set. If you're familiar with the sprays, you understand the funky fabric "belt loop" style holsters that sell with them, none of which is especially conducive to backcountry riding. Every rider has their own work around and none of them are any good. If they were, you wouldn't see a gigantic box of cast-off bear spray cannisters and holsters at Kirsten's just over the Wyoming / Colorado border.

What, as soon as you're out of bear country, you're suddenly immune to bobcats and mountain lions?  If you had a secure mounting point for your bear spray, you'd probably keep it with you for the whole trip. Just sayin.

This is the bikepacking-inspired design, optimized for front fork, handlebar, stem, or top tube use, it can be mounted using zip ties or water bottle bosses. It works with all 8oz bear spray cannisters. Produced with PETG resin, the unit is water, heat and UV resistant.  The bear spray literally "clicks" into place and is held there very securely by the 3d Printed mount. Unlike every other bear spray holder in the universe, it doesn't rattle around.  75g.

OK, just got back from a product scouting trip to Cabela's, the mega outdoors store, there's one less than 10 miles from our HQ here in Indiana. The bear spray section was impressive. They had four SKUs of bear spray, and one SKU of a bear spray belt loop cozy. Of the four bear spray SKUs, only one worked with the bearclaw holster--the 7.9oz Outdoorsman brand. Anything that's in the 7.5oz - 8.5oz range will work with the bearclaw holster. I suspect all of these things are produced at the same factory and branded by the companies that market them.

So continuing my product scouting info, the 9.2 oz Outdoorsman brand SKU at Cabela's is too tall to work with the bearclaw holster and the MACE "Guard Alaska" Bear Spray also wouldn't work, it's also 9.2oz. Maybe TMI here, but it's interesting to me that all of the bear spray SKUs came with a belt loop cozy carrying case (useless if you're going to keep it in your BearClaw Holster) and also interesting that the pricing for the 7.9oz is the same as the 9.2oz. Anyhoo, it might be better to buy your bear spray online because you can find it cheaper and without the useless belt loop cozy.

Three orientations available:

• "Center" - which has a straight pull orientation that is aligned with the center of the frame and with the water bottle bosses. Buy this one if you have a standard frameset and want to mount it to the water bottle bosses. This is the most commonly purchased unit.
• "Left" which has a left pull orientation relative to the water bottle bosses. Really useful for mounting on a rear suspension frameset if you're left handed and want to pull from the left. If you want to mount it on your right fork blade and be able to grab it with your right hand, this is the right one to buy. 
• "Right" which has a right pull orientation relative to the water bottle bosses. This one is really useful for mounting on a rear suspension frameset if you're right handed and want to pull from the right. If you want to mount it on the left fork blade and be able to grab it with your left hand, this is the one to buy. 

Ok, so the whole orientation thing is super confusing with the stage right / stage left thing on the fork Vs. the frameset. If you're not sure which to get, "Center" is probably the right choice.  Left and Right orientations are great for suspension MTB bikes and for super-technical bikepacking buildouts that leverage every nook and cranny of the bike. "The holster did its job flawlessly: bear spray was quickly available at all times without the risk of it getting damaged or lost. (I’ve had all 3 problems with other carrying methods before: 1. Not available quickly enough 2. Getting damaged (leaking) 3. Getting ejected). I had 4 grizzly encounters on this Divide (which is much more than usual?), 1 time I got actually charged by a mama griz with a cub. It was gone before I could spray it, but this encounter definitely was a reminder that having the bear spray available quickly & securely is absolutely key.
